Did you know that you can clean foggy headlights with toothpaste? Foggy headlights is something very common and it happens to all cars. Not only do they look bad, but they also have a very poor light output on the road at night. What happens is the lens on the headlight is made of poly carbonate plastic, and even though you can’t see it with a naked eye, they come with a UV protective coating from the factory. Overtime, the coating wears off and then when leave the car outside in bright sunlight, the UV rays coming from the sun is breaking the poly carbon structure of the lens and the color of the lens goes from transparent to foggy.

Overtime this gets worse and worse. It can even create small cracks in the plastic and you will end up buying a new set of headlights. It is important that you clean your headlights every time you notice that its getting foggy.

1. Clean your headlights with water

This step is very important. You want to remove all the debris on the headlights before you move onto the next step. If you have any dirt or small rocks on your headlights, you risk scratching or even creating small cracks.

2. Wipe your headlights with a clean towel

After you spray down your headlights with water, wipe your headlights with a clean microfiber towel. Make sure the headlights are completely dry before moving to the next step.

3. Sand your headlights with 600, 1500 and 3000 grit

This is an important step. You want to remove the top layer of the plastic. Start with a 600 grit and slowly increase your way to 3000 grit. Do not worry if your headlights turn milky white. You can order sandpaper on amazon.com.

4. Apply toothpaste to your headlights

You can do this step with a toothbrush or with a polisher drill. Either way, you can use any type of toothpaste. I usually use Colgate. Apply the toothpaste and put your work into it. You can repeat the last step as many times as you want. Make sure you wipe your headlights with a clean microfiber towel at the end.

5. The Results

At this point, your headlights should be shiny as the picture below. If you are not happy with the results, you can repeat the process.
