How Long Does Windshield Wipers Last?

As all items in the world, windshield wipers have a lifespan too. But do you know how long has to pass before you need to change your wipers?

”Most of the windshield wipers have a lifespan anywhere from 9 months to 12 months. This depends on how much do you use them. If you live in a rainy area or you travel everyday on a dust road, you will use the wipers often and will probably last you for 9 months. If you live in a place where it barely rains, then it’s going to be 12 months.”

Let’s talk more about windshield wipers.

The windshield wiper was first patented in 1903. The inventor Mary Anderson noticed that drivers are needed to stick their heads out the window in order to see the road during rainy weather. This inspired the lady inventor to create the very first windshield wipers. Mary’s windshield wipers were operating manually by pulling a lever that was located inside the cabin. The more sophisticated automatic windshield wiper was created in 1921 created by a pair of brothers based in Cleveland Ohio.

Design, Types and Lifespan of Windshield Wipers

Almost all of the windshield wipers have the same design. They consist of a pair of metal arms, each with one pivoting end and a long rubber blade attached to the other end. The blades move back and forth over the windshield thanks to an electric motor. This action pushes water and other obstructions away from the windshield surface while improving visibility for the driver. There are two main types of windshield wipers. The most common form uses parallel movement, meaning that both rubber blades move across the windshield in the same direction. These type of wipers maximize the visibility because the wipers cover most of the surface. The less common and less effective is opposed movement, where the blades are mounted on opposite sides of the windshield and move in opposite directions. It’s important to replace your wipers regularly. Most of the windshield wipers have a lifespan of between nine and twelve months, depending on how often they’re used. If you keep an old pair around for too long you might start noticing that they leave messy streaks on the windshield, or the blades could start catching dirt and debris more than they used to. Both wipers can also become noisy resulting in irritating squeaking sounds. Durability is an important factor to keep in mind. You want your blades to last as long as possible. If you’re willing to spend a little extra money consider wipers with rubber silicon integrated into their design. While these are typically more expensive, they last longer than traditional blades.

How To Improve The Lifespan Of Windshield Wipers

Are you tired of wiper blades that make all kinds of noise and leave streaks all over your windshield when you use them? Well, then today is your lucky day, because I’m going to show you how you can maintain your wiper blades and even how you can get fancy wiper blades that last much longer than the regular rubber ones. Now, of course, most people don’t think much about their wiper blades. They use them when it rains, and they don’t even clean them. They let all the dirt and grit get on them and ruin them. Imagine if you were a wiper blades, sitting out in the hot sun, ultraviolet rays ruining the rubber, dirt getting on them and eating them up. They need a little bit of cleaning every once in a while. And here’s how easy it is to clean.

How To Clean Windshield Wipers

  1. Get some denatured alcohol (see on amazon.com) and nice little clean towels.
  2. Then have the ignition key turned on. Turn the wipers on, and then turn the key off so the wipers are sitting up in the air where you can access them easily.
  3. Then you get some of the denatured alcohol and sprinkle it all over the cloth. And then wipe it up and down on the wiper blade.
  4. Do it three or four times. When you wipe and hardly any black comes off, you know it’s clean, and do the other side.
  5. And, of course, get some good windshield cleaner (see on amazon.com) every once in a while, pick the blades up, and clean the windshield, especially the part where it sits. Because all the crud will collect here. And if you let all the grit stay there, it will eat the blades up.

Best Type of Windshield Wipers

If you really want your wiper blades to last a long time, you might try some of these silicone-based wiper blades. I put a set on my old Toyota six years ago and they’re still wiping clean. I have to say, that’s the first I’ve ever seen advertising that lied in the wrong direction. This says they last two times longer. Heck, these things on mine have lasted about 10 times longer so far. This silicone rubber combination is just stronger and more flexible. It goes a long time before it tears and rip. Now, you still want to clean it with the alcohol every once in a while, but if you do take care of these silicone wiper blades, they’re going to last a long time. So you might very well ask, why doesn’t everybody sell silicone wiper blades? Well, I went to an auto parts store the other day and ask them about silicone blades. And the store manager just said, we sell thousands of wiper blades every month in this store. If we sold these silicone ones, we would sell so much less. We’d make less profit. So don’t expect to be seeing them in an auto parts store very soon. I got mine online from Amazon. And they work great. Sure, you pay more for them, but the hassle of not having to change them and having them on for years is fine by me. Because if I can make something in our disposable society less disposable, I’m all for it.
